This Saturday: Edward Walton Wilcox Opening @ Merry Karnowsky.

Merry Karnowsky Gallery on LaBrea is having an opening for Edward Walton Wilcox this weekend and it looks fucking great. When an artist titles his painting, “I Keep the Devil in a Small House Outside of Town” I think you know you’re in for a treat. And I think I’ll try to make it to this one.

It’s a solo exhibition and the opening reception starts at 8 PM here:

170 S. La Brea Avenue (in the Art 170 Building) • Los Angeles, CA 90036 • (323) 933-4408

I Keep the Devil in a Small House Outside of Town

“My work is a moral critique of a world attempting to shroud itself in beauty and diversion in the midst of its own collapse. My intention is for the work to have a preternatural effect on the viewer; evoking at times a sense of awe, terror, insignificance, romantic sensuality, allusions to our self-destructive nature, the temporal nature of beauty and life, and the decay of the material world as a constant of which we are always aware.” – Wilcox

  1. So great to see this on here, thank you! I’m a huge follower of Edward’s work, and yes, you certainly are in for a treat. I think you might be especially fond of the installation that’s going in the back room, and the paintings, and the sculpture…I am so excited.

Ooh sculpture as well!? I’m scared already… I can see it now:

“I keep the devil in a small ceramic cage in the back of the gallery. Oh! Oh shit! The clay broke! Everyone look for a crafty, shape-shifting, most-dangerous-demon-to-ever-exist type! Shit! Of COURSE clay wouldn’t hold him.. stupid! stupid! stupid!”
