TONIGHT: Cold War Kids Have Warm Bleeding Liberal Hearts With A FREE Concert At Busker Fest

August 21st, 2009

Tonight head to Downtown Long Beach’s East Village Art District for some good ‘ol busking.

Cold War Kids Loyalty cover

Beginning at 6pm local bands line the streets of downtown Long Beach to play 25 minute acoustic style sets while the audience stroll by (flask in pocket) tossing wooden nickles into performers’ guitar cases. Local bands include Free Moral Agents, Deep Sea Diver, So Many Wizards (check these guys out, I’m going to make it rain, uh, hail nickles on them), Chris Paul Overall, Pawn Shop Kings, Brook Lee Catastrophe, and 60 Watt Kid to name a few. At the end of the evening the band who has acquired the most wooden nickels will open for the Cold War Kids on the main stage. Attendees should get there at 6pm to collect the wooden nickles, maps and band schedules. Busking begins at 7pm, the second occurs at 7:30, and the last at 8pm. Cold War Kids begin their set at 9pm at the main stage on First and Elm Avenue. If you’re smart you’ll get there by bike (please reference ‘flask in pocket’ comment above *ed. note: you can still get a DUI riding a bike while intoxicated. WTTD releases itself of all responsibility at all times, however, so go ahead and get drunk and ride your bike. fuck if we care.) to score the free bicycle valet parking courtesy of Long Beach Cyclists.

TONIGHT: Cirque Berzerk’s Closing Night in Downtown LA

August 8th, 2009

TONIGHT: Cirque Berzerk’s Closing Night in Downtown LA

Question: What do you call a burlesque show mixed with a traveling circus in downtown LA?
Answer: A seriously sloppy bachelorette party.

This is true, but I’m talking about Cirque Berzerk

Cirque Berzerk, originated at Burning Man,  is like Cirque de Soleil meets Tim Burton. The performance is edgy and sexy, and will have you taking notes on the twists and turns you’ll want your counterpart to learn. Men with exposed muscles and women with beautifully sculpted bodies leave you entranced with performances on trampolines, acrobatics on hanging silks, and wildly hot contortion acts. A berzerk looking band plays worldly music above the stage, adding serious sounds to the inside of the tent. Arrive early with a bottle of wine and some food to get toasty in Los Angeles  Historic Park before heading into the tent.  After the show head back into the park to drink at the outside bars, and party with the twenty piece band Vaud and The Villains,  with downtown LA’s skyline as your back drop.

Closing night is TONIGHT
Saturday August 8th, 8:30pm
Tickets range from $25 – $80  ( get the $25 ones, there’s not a bad seat in the house)
Located inside Los Angeles Historic Park

School Is For Fools, unless it’s P.S. 1’s Summer Warm Up Series

July 24th, 2009

Hipsters, artists, musicians and young Williamsburg families flock to P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center each Saturday beginning July 4th weekend through September 5th for the annual Summer Warm Up series. Just the right mix of leading-edge art, experimental music and innovative architecture create the draw to this museum in Long Island City, Queens. MoMA, in conjunction with P.S. 1, chose a winner each year from their Young Architects Program to design the courtyard in which the main partying takes place. This year’s design “Afterparty” is constructed of silver mesh stretched over aluminum poles to form smoke stack like towers that match the museums industrial surroundings. Not only does it looks cool, but it is cool, since it also acts as a cooling “urban shelter” (that’s what you get from two Yale graduates). DJs spin a diverse mix from new wave, to rap, to acid jazz. Makeshift bars are set up throughout the courtyard offering a narrow selection of delicious micro brews to keep you, er, hydrated while wandering around the museum and dancing in the courtyard.

Listen Up: London based sextet (yow!) Fanfarlo’s album Resevoir out now in the US

July 15th, 2009

Fanfarlo, the London based indie/folk pop sextet has their debut album, Resevoir, out now in the US. Produced by Peter Katis (The National, Interpol), Fanfarlo sounds like David Byrne meets Arcade Fire. Lead Sweedish singer/ songwritter Simon Balthazar creates well-crafted, simple songs which make heavy use of trumpets, violins, guitars, drums, xylophones, saws (yes, saws) and banjos (yes, banjos). The entire album can be downloaded on iTunes currently for only $5.99 (a wise investment), and you can also check them out live at the Troubadour on September 15th. Even David Bowie claimed Fanfarlo one of his favorite new bands back in March (you realize I just name dropped David Bowie, which is why I’m able to keep this post short and sweet, like a chocolate covered midget).

The song below for “I’m A Pilot” speaks for itself.

Lykke Li – Little Bit

Lykke Li from MyspaceThis morning when I found out Lykke Li is scheduled to perform at The Wiltern on August 4th, I got all types of hot and bothered. Strange. It was at that moment I came to the realization I had a woman crush. Damn. It felt awkward at first, and I looked around hoping none of my coworkers noticed, but then I proceeded to convince myself what I was feeling was completely natural. Firstly, she’s a sexy Swede who makes dancing like your weird Aunt Janis at Bat Mitzvah’s look good. Secondly, she writes lyrics like “I’m workin’, to make butter for my piece of bun”. Butter for your piece of bun? You can’t deny that shit. Thirdly she’s got a bevy of odd ‘instruments’ like bike chains, kazoos, strung bells and plastic clappers that she plays during her songs, she even sings through a bullhorn on occasion.  Do me a favor, vote No on Prop 8. I want to give this chick a deserving home.

TONIGHT: What The Funk? Back Of The Hand All Stars make you taste the back of their hands at The Brig

June 30th, 2009

You mean to tell me you haven’t hit up The Brig yet on a Tuesday night? That’s a shame. Your mother is very, very disappointed in you. The Back Of The Hand All Stars are a jazz/funk/fusion improv band based out of Venice. An eclectic bunch of bass, keys, harmonica, drums, trombone, sax and guitar while a DJ scratches everything from 90’s rap to twenty first century indie in the background. The result of this collaboration is the type of music that lays hold of public attention, makes heads nod & faces illuminate (i.e. bring some pot). Not to mention, the kogi truck plants itself in the parking lot during the set, in case you Hollywood kids needed another reason to make a trip to the west side.

Get there.
