You think you can rock 8-bit? Prove it at Classic Tetris World Championship

August 3rd, 2010

That’s right, kids. The nerds you idolized as a child are back and they want to kick your ass.

Anyone can enter the Classic Tetris World Championship on Sunday, August 8, for a mere $10, but your quest will likely end in heartbreak like those of the Steve Wiebes before you. One ass-kicking not enough for you? No problem! Repeats are only $3 each. And they’re making a documentary of the smackdown, so you can even show it to your grandkids one day.

Classic Tetris World Championship

The whole thing has been pulled together by Nintendo World Champion Robin Mihara and Twin Galaxies will be on hand to keep everything on the up-and-up. And if you’re not too giddy after the finals, there’ll be a rooftop party after.

What: Classic Tetris World Championship

Where: Downtown Independent Theater, Los Angeles, CA

When: August 8, 2010, high noon.

Get tournament details and other info at the 1989-style website. (Seriously. You guys are supposed to be nerds. What gives with the crappy website?)

Stuff Yourself for the Kids

OC Foodie Fest

Yum.

Hot damn! Who doesn’t love 50 food trucks in one place to support charity?

Coming up August 28th: The OC Foodie Fest! (I know, I know. The OC sucks. But there’s beer! And food! On trucks! Yay!)

Much deliciousness will be available, including personal faves Barbie’s Q, Coolhaus, Don Chow Tacos, and Tasty Meat!. And the World Fare bustaurant will be there too, natch. Get the full list here.

When: August 28, 2010, 11:30a – 7p

Where: Honda Center, Anaheim

Why: For the kids. And it’s delicious. I think there are some bands and DJs and stuff too, but that’s not the point.

How much: $12 + the toll Orange County takes on your soul.

Buy your tickets here. Because they’re more expensive at the door. And how bad would it suck to get all the way to the OC and find it sold out?

Selleck Waterfall Sandwich SONG

July 15th, 2010

It’s no secret that we here at WTTD are slightly obsessed with Tom Selleck. So imagine our glee when we discovered this gem over at Sloshspot. Those crazy geniuses had an original song written and set to a video of Selleck Waterfall Sandwich classics. Bask in its glory.

Don’t know Selleck Waterfall Sandwich? Get cool.

Comic-Con Just Got Cooler – Rock’n Comic Con

May 26th, 2010

I know what you’re thinking: How could Comic-Con possibly get any cooler?

Let’s break it down: Take the largest nerd-culture event in the Western Hemisphere, add aging rockers from the likes of Dokken and Guns N’ Roses, stir, and serve it up in Pasadena, a city known for its extreme badass-ness. And it’s all happening this weekend.

In addition to Stan Lee, who is actually cool, Rock’n Comic Con promises a host of D-list celebrities and a bunch of stuff tangentially associated with projects that populate the “meh” zone on the cool meter. To wit:

A Jack Sparrow impersonator

A non-profit group of Star Wars LARPers

A pirate band

A few Deal or No Deal models

A replica Star Trek Captian’s Chair

A tribute to The Knack

And don’t worry—it’s not a Rock’n Comic Con without a masquerade.

**Sorry kids, something’s broken and I can’t upload images. You’ll have to click on over to Rock’n Comic Con to see the magic for yourself. (ed. note: here, fixed. image below.)

Rogue Taxidermy Tonight

May 7th, 2010

Looking for something new and bizarre to do tonight? Look no further—Rogue Taxidermy is here!

It’s weird, it’s wacky, and it’s opening tonight. Ok, it’s also a little gross. But probably not as gross as the taxidermy demo on Saturday night.

Art + Rebellion = Art Against Empire

April 12th, 2010

This exhibit only lasts til Saturday, so if you haven’t gone yet, do it now.

CIMG0012

Center for the Study of Political Graphics has a hoard of posters protesting US Imperialism and they’re on all on display at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) in Art Against Empire: Graphic Responses to U.S. Interventions Since W.W.II.

Seriously, the exhibit is fantastic. Very cool art, very cool messages. It’s free and there was a load of related events–screenings, lectures, etc. The exhibit is almost over, so only one screening remains on Thursday night, 4/15: Artists for a New South Africa, screening and presentation.

The space is also great–a little hidden gem in the middle of Hollywood. I’ve lived less than 2 blocks from this gallery for 10 years and I’d never been in before. It’s a shame LACE seems to operate in stealth mode. Looks like they do pretty cool stuff, so check it out even if you miss this show.

Gallery hours:

Wednesday – Sunday, noon – 6pm
Friday, noon – 9pm
