Artists to Admire: Mike Stilkey

February 4th, 2010

world famous bad ass and WTTD pal Mike Stilkey brings a literal approach to his art (god i’m so fucking clever), often using books, their pages and their covers as his canvases. his room-sized installations are something to behold; brick-like stacks of literature that reach from the floor to the ceiling while painted over with Stilkey’s trademark twisty-turny animal studies and gaunt-like, dark-haired figures (who you can just tell are waxing all philosophic about Dostoyevsky and shit). it’s been a couple years since Los Angeles saw a Stilkey opening, he’s been too busy jet setting, but lucky for us in the meantime he has made an amazing new limited edition print available via BLK/MRKT. (hey! Valentine’s Day is coming! maybe it’ll make a good present for that hot librarian you’ve been trying to mack on.) here’s the info direct from Stilkey himself:

“I’m excited to announce that my very first print is now available for sale through BLK/MRKT Editions! The print, “Sleeping Horse,” is a four-color screenprint on 100 percent cotton rag paper. It measures 24 by 18 inches. The print is an edition of 150 and each one is signed, numbered and stamped. They are available for purchase for $45 and will be delivered within 2 to 3 weeks.” – so get your piping hot prints here, straight out of the oven, and check out Stilkey’s own site for plenty more good. art.

let’s start a war this Saturday, January 16th with Dan Quintana, Brian Viveros and Bad Otis Link at CoproGallery in Santa Monica

January 11th, 2010

this Saturday Brian Viveros and Dan Quintana are bringing their special brand of military  fetish to Santa Monica with their Desensitized opening at CoproGallery. Bad Otis Link provides backup with his You’ll Be Sorry When I’m Dead show in the back room. (jesus satan says that every day and he doesn’t get an opening. people usually just laugh, actually.)
more info from Copro’s newsletter: Hey Everyone – This Saturday, January 16, 8:00-11:30 PM, CoproGallery presents  “Desensitized” with the art of Brian Viveros & Dan Quintana. This is an incredible show for both artists and all the work is amazing. Its going to be a multi-media event in 5D with films being projected, sountracks of bizzare music and sculptures as well as live music and costumed Desensitized girls. Everyone is encouraged to participate so please dress up in military gear like a Viveros or Quintana painting and get a free “Desensitized” poster. In gallery 2 Bad Otis Link’s “You’ll Be Sorry When I’m Dead” which will also be in 5D with films, twisted puppets and warped art. I hope to see everyone there but for those that can’t make please check out the Brian Viveros web-preview. The other previews will be ready soon so stay tuned!!!

TONIGHT, TOMORROW AND SATURDAY: get your bloodlust on at Silent Movie Theater with Cinefamily

October 29th, 2009

Embodiment of Evil from coffin joe aka jose mojica marins

Cinefamily has programmed a great fucking month of quality (in other words, terrible) horror films and i’m truly sorry i haven’t been able to post more about the absolutely stellar run they’ve had. this week wraps up the series with a trilogy of terror (no, not the movie, but definitely the same general idea) tonight, tomorrow night, and Saturday. tickets for all three evenings are available via their calendar page here.
tonight there is a triple-feature with Hatchet (even though the amazing Chopping Mall is pictured in their flyer for some reason), Shakma and Night of the Demon.

Slasherpalooza gonzo slasher films at silent movie theater cinefamily
tomorrow night, and holy fuck buttons do i want to go to this but i’ll be too busy getting loaded, is a double feature from torture porn auteur José Mojica Marins, with uncensored runs of Hallucinations of a Deranged Mind and Embodiment of Evil (wonderfully NSFW trailer below).

and Halloween they close it all up with the Bollyween party and fundraiser. info from the site below the pic.

Cinefamily Bollyween fundraiser

This Hallow’s Eve, The Cinefamily joins forces with Dublab to throw the best Halloween party ever, Bollywood-style! One thing they really understand in India: every movie’s better with song-and-dance numbers — even horror movies! In that spirit, the Cinefamily premieres Bollyweird: The Movie — our very own feature-length video mashup celebrating the most horrifying, fantastic, costume-crazed and outlandish moments of vintage Indian musical madness ever. This isn’t just Bollywood, it’s Bollyweeeeeird. Then, once the movie’s over, we’re gonna clear the couches, light the incense, make a dance floor, start doing the electric vindaloo, and have a real monster mashala!

+ Drinks and dosas (provided by The Dosa Truck)!
+ Ghoulish giveaways!
+ Costume prizes!
+ DJ sets from the dublab “Bloodsucking” Sound System and Dr. Who Witchcraft Coven!
+ Live performances by freaks like:
12am – Bobb Bruno
1am – Private Beach + the pschedelic horror film Snake Mountain Colada!
2am – Golden Hits
+ The Phantom Photo Booth!
+ Franken Stand’s vegan hot dogs!
+ Terrifying tarot readings!
+ The best Halloween ever! It’s better than Halloween…its Bollyween!

reading Body Language with Modeselektor

October 14th, 2009

modeselektor

new sort of Halloween-y video from Modeselektor, who are playing the Forum in Los Angeles at HARD Haunted Mansion on the second day of the festival (October 30th + October 31st – tickets are still available here). not an amazing lineup, but definitely good enough for ecstacy-lovers, with performances from Justice, Deadmau5, 2ManyDJs, A-Trak, Bloody Beetroots, Basement Jaxx, Crookers, Major Lazer, WTTD homeboy Steve Aoki, Classixx, and more.
New Yorkers, don’t feel all left out in the cold (even if you are, hee hee, ’cause we live in Los Angeles where even when it’s raining it’s hella comfortable) because Modeselektor has a headlining show all their own the following weekend at the Music Hall of Williamsburg (November 7th – tickets are available here.)
