TONIGHT: see some dirty, drugged-up hippies at the Steve Allen Theater
talk about a bad trip! TONIGHT Grindhouse presents the cult classic An American Hippie In Israel at the Steve Allen Theater. the cheeseball psychedelic masterpiece of terrible is screening after thirty-one years of obscurity. seems like it will probably be full of antidisestablishmentarianism. and also drugs. lots of drugs. i have no idea why but The Ettes are also bringing their Nashville lo-fi garage rock to the night. this seems like a whole lot of amazing for only $10, and movies actually sell out at the Steve Allen a lot so get your tickets in advance here. (The Ettes are also playing tomorrow night at the Echo - tickets here for only $8.) “shut your ass!” (*update: there are cheaper tickets available through Goldstar here. get them fast, it stops a few hours before the show.)

Wolverine could hardly have been any worse, they should have shot it this way. here’s a collection of abandoned MTV Movie Awards promos from Fatal Farm, the weirdos behind the last couple Major Lazer videos. you can see more of their work on their YouTube Channel here, including some frankly disturbing remakes of classic TV credit sequences, including, for instance, a kiddie-porn bondage version of Duck Tales. yes, you read that right.
Friday Fun Links #21

Animal Collective created a film… it will be featured at Sundance. Avey Tare says, “It’s kinda like a psychedelic film, it’s not like a narrative film or anything.” He explained. “There are more cohesive moments in it, but then there are some that are a little more abstract.” I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say it’s gonna be weird.
Here are the Top 5 YouTube sports moments of 2009. Little kids playing football O-M-G.

Check out the artwork of Elizabeth Graeber. This sweet narwhal is just one of many gems.

Hey LA! Rolling Stone magazine is opening a nightclub/restaurant on Hollywood & Highland. Here’s what one of the magazine partner’s has to say: “We are both excited and determined to bring the spirit of the magazine to life – the edginess, the coolness, the classiness and the timelessness – in making this venue a place to see and be seen in.” …. Hmm, a nightclub attached to an outdoor mall is a place to be seen? Yeaah… I’m gonna go hang with the elite crowd at Dave & Buster’s.
Trailer for Brooklyn’s Finest, the new movie from Antoine Fuqua, director of Training Day. It looks like a thug-life version of The Departed. Reasons why I post this:
- It features the return of Wesley “Dark Chocolate” Snipes
- I met Don Cheadle once and he was pretty cool
- I spotted Omar from The Wire in the background somewhere…
oh you indie kids and your stop motion fetish… new video for Submarine Symphonika from the Submarines

The Submarines‘ new video for Submarine Symphonika is so cute it makes me want to do something truly horrific just to even out the tao a little. director Josh Forbes also made the awesome video for Peace and Hate, and he has a ton more music videos available for your perusal at his Winch&Pulley site, including videos for Sea Wolf, Cold War Kids, Ariel Pink, Alkaline Trio, and a ton more. (this one for Trouble is a Friend from hipster cutie Lenka is pretty slick, although you might want to turn down the volume and just watch the illustrations. oooh, burn!)
The Drifter Contest Giveaway!

Gobble gobble bitches! It’s almost turkey time and you know what that means… ‘Tis the season for intense food comas, awkward war stories from Uncle Ed, fun trips through airport security, and spending time with the people you love most..your alcoholic friends on Wednesday night. But since we know the REAL spirit of the season is giving, we’d like to give something back to you guys. So who likes free stuff?
The Drifter, coming to DVD on December 8th, is a different kind of surf movie. It tells the story of Rob Machado’s journey to go way beyond his comfort zone and become completely isolated from the world with his own thoughts and dreams. Kinda like what Kanye West did with his career. “The Drifter is a visual metaphor for a free spirit’s conscious abandonment of the worldly traps of modern life as he searches for the inner freedom and spiritual joy offered by a life of renunciation”
So here’s what we’re giving away to ONE lucky winner (must be from the US):
- 1 copy of The Drifter on DVD
- 1 bar of Rob’s own organic blend of surf wax (see below)
- 1 copy of the latest issue of FILTER, which includes a sweet Drifter feature
Oh and look at this ridiculous soundtrack for the flick:
