a bunch of j. satan’s fav newish bands are hitting sunny Los Angeles so yay for me! The Smith Westerns and Best Coast are opening for the stellar Cold Cave tonight and tomorrow at the Glasshouse in Pomona and at the Echoplex in Echo Park respectively. AVI Buffalo (meh… not so great live, though i do like their studio music) also opens tonight at the Glasshouse. both shows are all ages but whaddayagonnado? this is a three thumbs up show from jesus satan, the show this last December in Eagle Rock was painfully short, but well worth the drive nonetheless.
Faith No More!!! fuck yes fuck yes fuck yes!!! they’re going to have trouble selling Saturday, but otherwise, hellz to the yeah, Coachella! break out the drugs, party people. jesus satan will see you in April. tickets go on sale Friday, Jan 22nd at 10am via Ticketmaster and the Coachella site.
so Dan Deacon’s first couple albums are a tough listen, no fooling, but man oh man if Bromst isn’t one of my favorite albums of the year, i don’t know what is what. tonight he takes his one-man frenzy to the Echo, and he and opening band Nuclear Power Pants reprise their fun-filled evening with another fun-filled evening at the Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock. three thumbs up show from jesus satan.
New Yorkers keep an eye out, too, he’ll be playing two dates mid-November at the Rennsselaer Polytechnic Institute and the SUNY Purchase.
reunited and it feels so fine. i guess that Foo Fighters thing never really worked out, as Sunny Day Real Estate is playing the Henry Fonda / Music Box tonight with all original members. has anyone told Dave Grohl? boy, his bands just never seem to find any success… this is a three thumbs up, highly recommended show from jesus satan. see you there.
here’s a lovely new video of weirdness for the song “Sing Along” from goofball Icelandic troupe Múm. not sure what they’re smoking up there what with Bjork and Sigur Rós et al, but i wish they’d stop bogarting and send it down our way. that or they’re all just insane from spending so many long dark winters stuck inside with nothing to do but make emotional pop music.
Múm is playing New York on the 24th of October at the Le Poisson Rouge (158 Bleecker Street, 10012 – tickets here) and they stop by Los Angeles at the El Rey (5515 Wilshire Blvd, 90036) in June (tickets here). they’re fun live, should be a quirky good time for all, and this one gets a three thumbs up recommendation from j. satan.
i like it when cute things are scary and scary things are cute. so does Bobby Chiu. someone needs to hand this guy a Disney movie. more art after the jump.
i can’t tell you how promising this show looks. Luke Chueh has been looking to break out of his cute little mutilated bears meme, and tonight he brings you a new and incredibly well-guarded series presenting his interpretation of the nine rings of hell from the Inferno chapter of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. jesus satan is a big fan of Chueh, and jesus satan is also a big fan of hell, as anyone familiar with my dating life will attest, so i’ll be there for sure, America. Gallery 1988 LA (7020 Melrose Ave., 90038).

Sucks for him but for you and I, it’s a lot of fun. Jay-Z was supposed to hand deliver his new album, The Blueprint 3, personally. I guess he’s got butter fingers because the INTERNET has the album in it’s possession a full 12 days before the actual release on 9/11/09. The internet herself has been speaking to me about this all day via twitter trends, blogs, forums, etc. We posted the tracklist here earlier if you want to check it out.
Obviously I’m not putting the songs up here, but the friendly folks over at Manolith offer some lovely advice on how to go about finding it:
“While you won’t find the leaked album here, you could, if you wanted, try Googling “megaupload” or “rapidshare” + “blueprint 3? and you’ll … oh nevermind.”
Next week on September 11th, 8 years from the anniversary of the attacks as well as the release of The Blueprint, Jay-Z will be putting on a 9/11 charity concert at MSG titled, “Answer The Call.” Proceeds (they’re hoping to raise about $750,000) will go to the New York Police and Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund. TICKETS GO ON SALE SEPTEMBER 8TH for $50. That’s a hot ticket.

damn, i can’t wait for the scene when the cute widdle cub trips out… Cinefamily is presenting two showings of The Bear tonight while hometown post-protopunk heroes No Age accompany the film with a live score they’ve written specifically for the movie. this night has fantastic written all over it, and it gets a three-thumbs-up recommendation from j. satan. shows are at 8pm and 10.30pm. (catch No Age doing their normal thang at the FYF Fest, too, on September 5th.)
The Bear (w/ live score by No Age) from the Cinefamily site: L.A.-based, world-renowned experimental noise pop duo No Age will appear live at the Cinefamily to perform their brand-new score for Jean-Jacques Annaud’s majestic 1988 film The Bear, a near-wordless cinematic expedition deep into the savagery and tenderness of the animal kingdom. Told from the titular species’ point of view, The Bear chronicles the journey of an orphan bear cub and a lone adult bear banding together to avoid two human hunters. Along the way, director Annaud has great fun with the storytelling possibilities from a non-human perspective, including dream sequences and an unforgettable psychdelic mushroom bear trip! With nearly no (human) dialogue, the film easily lends itself to live scoring, and No Age drummer Dean Spunt and guitarist Randy Randall have crafted a shimmering 90-minute set of sonic blasts and delicate textures that perfectly complement the peculiar, touching and altogether unique experience that is The Bear.
