Artist to Admire: El Mac.

August 10th, 2009

El Mac. Known for his amazing renditions of hot chicks, meticulous attention to detail, and the “how is that possible?” things he does with spraypaint. Operating as “The Mac” since the mid 90s, he’s also the coverboy for this month’s Juxtapoz and there’s a lengthy interview inside. Check out the video interview here.

BONUS: He’s got an upcoming exhibition in LA with his sometimes-partner Retna (we’ll remind you):

This Saturday: Chaka Opens at Mid-City Arts.

April 23rd, 2009

“Mid-City Arts is pleased to present the first solo show ever from the infamous LA graffiti artist, Chaka. Resurrection opens April 25th and will feature highly anticipated new work from the mysterious Chaka.”

This looks pretty bad-ass, not only is Chaka a Los Angeles legend… causing upwards of 500K in property damage while spreading his name…but he’s also a hard-to-catch kind of dude. As you can imagine by the lifestlye he lives as a widespread graffiti artist. So seeing him in person, SIGNING AUTOGRAPHS no less, is a rare opportunity. Should be a very cool show. It’s Chaka’s FIRST SHOW EVER. Info below the imagery:

This Saturday: Edward Walton Wilcox Opening @ Merry Karnowsky.

April 20th, 2009

Merry Karnowsky Gallery on LaBrea is having an opening for Edward Walton Wilcox this weekend and it looks fucking great. When an artist titles his painting, “I Keep the Devil in a Small House Outside of Town” I think you know you’re in for a treat. And I think I’ll try to make it to this one.

It’s a solo exhibition and the opening reception starts at 8 PM here:
Merry Karnowsky Gallery
170 S. La Brea Avenue (in the Art 170 Building) • Los Angeles, CA 90036 • (323) 933-4408

I Keep the Devil in a Small House Outside of Town

I Keep the Devil in a Small House Outside of Town

“My work is a moral critique of a world attempting to shroud itself in beauty and diversion in the midst of its own collapse. My intention is for the work to have a preternatural effect on the viewer; evoking at times a sense of awe, terror, insignificance, romantic sensuality, allusions to our self-destructive nature, the temporal nature of beauty and life, and the decay of the material world as a constant of which we are always aware.” – Wilcox

Check out his website’s shop to buy some art. Wild, sexy, dark art like this:

TOMORROW: Andy Warhol Film Day.

April 9th, 2009

A pretty hilarious event to have on Good Friday: The USC Fischer Gallery will be screening two of Warhol’s films from the 60s. Yes there will be wine, no it won’t be the blood of Christ(?).

You can also check out his photography in the museum, interesting because ya know… it’s not soup can prints, it’s a somewhat unknown part of his artistic side. Some notable portraits included in this collection are Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali, Candy Spelling, designer Gianfranco Ferre, Bianca Jagger, Artist Georgia O’Keefe, and Andre Talley of Vogue among others.

Info:
USC Fisher Museum of Art, 823 Exposition Blvd., Los Angeles; noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Ends April 18. Free. (213) 740-4561

From the LA Times review:

The museum has paired photographs with thematically relevant quotes from Warhol’s personal diary and his book “Exposures.” On one wall, next to a Polaroid series of Bianca Jagger (who, like Warhol, was a Studio 54 regular), he writes: “I’ve never seen her take drugs. That’s her real beauty secret.”

Beside a black-and-white image of an inflatable raft floating in a swimming pool reads Warhol’s famous view of Los Angeles: “I love L.A. I love Hollywood. They’re beautiful. Everybody’s plastic — but I love plastic. I want to be plastic.”
