The Arctic Monkeys – A Certain Romance

The Arctic Monkeys arrive in New York tonight, bringing 30 degree temperatures with them. Fuck you Arctic A-holes. Why can’t you be the Flaming Apes or the Scorching Gorillas? I’m finally jealous of you sun baked Angelenos. Anyway they’re playing tonight and tomorrow with the Screaming Females at Terminal 5. Get your tickets here because… there’s not much else going on so why not?

And it’s daunting… the schedule page for this year’s CMJ festival is just a mess, there’s an incredible amount of performers all week and the best way to narrow it down into something coherent is to pick a favorite venue and see what’s happening there all week. Here are some manageable schedules listed by venues I recommend:

Mercury Lounge (featuring The xx, Mumford and Sons, Dutchess and The Duke, Moondoggies)
Cake Shop (featuring Crystal Antlers, Kittens Ablaze)

WTF is happening!? Why are there so many colors? All of this stuff happens within the course of 4 hours?? AHHHHHH why are kittens on fire!?!?!!

Still need help deciding? I understand, this is one of those moments where you’re presented with so many choices that you literally freeze up, go into shock mode, wet yourself, burn a kitten or 2 and end up doing nothing. Well Pitchfork also tries to make sense of things with their guide to CMJ here but beware, it’s still massive and somewhat confusing. Just change your trousers and get out there people.

Wavves – Mickey Mouse

Hipster bro, Wavves, just came off of playing a few shows with a broken wrist. Sweet deal trooper, now he’s taking a break to take care of the break. In the note announcing the surgery on his blog (recently updated: Wavves bro just beat Resident Evil 5 and is moving on to Metal Gear Solid 4, rock on) he also gave us the new Mickey Mouse demo track above… It’s surprisingly great. Surprising because he comes off as a fucking hipster gimmick but I gotta admit, a lot of his stuff shows promise. This demo has real Noah Lennox vibe going on.

To make things tastier, he’s touring with one of my favorite new indie sensations: Ganglians (cool enough to warrant a PF review here), who we’ve posted about before if you wanna go listen (you should).
