oh Corey Helford Gallery, will you be mine?
TONIGHT: sunny Los Angeles hosts a grip of ‘art openings’ aka ‘free wine’
here’s a rare weekend post to celebrate a record breaking traffic day yesterday as well as to point out a lot of great openings tonight in the metropolitan Los Angeles area. earlier in the week we mentioned the Brian Viveros/Dan Quintana/Bad Otis Link triple header in Santa Monica, and jesus satan also highly recommends Corey Helford Gallery’s opening for both Michael Mararian’s “Youth Parade” and Miso’s “The Cold Returns”. Mararian’s current project looks incredibly intense and wickedly funny, just the way i like my women art. there are also something like fourteen other shows tonight, so check out Sour Harvest for a fairly thorough rundown on what’s what, where and at what times. Sour Harvest also emails a great weekly newsletter on recommended art openings, so sign up for that shit here. then i don’t always have to be the one telling you what to do, where to go, how to dress, etc…. i mean, what am i, your mom?
Corey Helford Gallery is bringing some of its evil cheer to the holiday season
aww… Supes, don’t get yourself down! there’s a New Year coming! to celebrate the holidays, Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City is having two festive openings that have absolutely nothing to do with xmas. this coming Saturday is a fun little group orgy opening featuring multi-plane paintings from fifty of Helford’s all-stars, including Van Arno, the lovely Ana Bagayan, Gary Baseman, Buff Monster, Luke Chueh, Coop, Korin Faught, Sylvia Ji and just a shit ton more. there should be jusssssttt enough holiday cheer for everyone, and if you’re still not feeling the fucking spirit, then a week later Immortal Artifacts from Kukula opens. it will probably be chock full of naughty NSFW paintings and sketches of, um, precocious little girls. it’s bound to be a delightful show, although unless you want to spend your holidays in federal prison, i would avoid having your picture taken at that one, especially by the pedophilia net trying to look inconspicuous in the unmarked van parked across the street.
TOMORROW NIGHT: Van Arno and Melissa Forman share a lovely evening of artistic expression at Corey Helford in Culver City
i’ve mentioned this opening before, but holy fuck is this flyer from Van Arno amazing. see you at Corey Helford (8522 Washington Blvd, 90232) tomorrow night, America.

LIL’ MORT RELEASE PARTY
10.1.09
Thursday, October 1st, 2009, 7 – 10 pm
Munky King Gallery
Renowned artist COOP teams up with Munky King to drop his coveted first vinyl toy, LIL’MORT! Join us as COOP brings Death to Life with a touch of lowbrow defiance. Based on the original painting shown recently at his solo at the Corey Helford Gallery. The piece takes its name from the French phrase, “Le Petit Mort”, a metaphor for the spiritual release one experiences from orgasm. COOP is considered one of the pioneers of the Pop Surrealist movement, and now his vision is available as a limited edition vinyl.
Coop came out to Los Angeles from Bixby, Oklahoma in the late 1980s and quickly became regarded as one of the preeminent underground artists of his time. Known for his prolific poster work, custom font stylings for House Industries, as well as his iconic imagery of devil girls, smoking devil, and cars, Coop has solidified his place in pop-culture history.
Get a chance to meet the legend himself with original art, prints and other new goodies on hand! Available at very limited quantities will be the Munky King exclusive clear colorway and the black colorway.
