it’s a lightweight tag team match with Pantha du Prince vs The Sight Below @ echoplex, September 17th

September 1st, 2010

you like minimal shoegazing ambient electronica, don’t you? well sure you do! you like spending only twelve bucks per ticket, right? well sure you do! what a coincidence i should bring those points up, because there’s a minimal shoegazing ambient electonica double header at Echoplex on Friday, September 17th, with Pantha du Prince and The Sight Below and cheap as fuck tickets are available here for only twelve bucks. (yes, that’s Noah Lennox from Animal Collective on vocals in the video above.) – also, on a related tip, further hilarious evidence at how impossibly pretentious those Pitchfork kidz are – money quote from the Pantha du Prince write-up that Echoplex included on the event page for Pantha, “Though he lacks the crossover name recognition of producers like the Field, Burial, and Lindstrøm”… you know, because all three of those guys are on my xmas lists.

WTTD recommendations for the rest of the week…

July 29th, 2010

i picked a good week to move, there’s not much going on in this beast of a city for once, except the exceptional Zola Jesus who is playing Part Time Punks this Sunday at the Echo. not sure if it’s a show or just a DJ set, either way i’ll see you there. here’s a few other recommendations for the week below:

Thursday, July 29

NITE JEWEL / MEMORYHOUSE / BATHS / KISSES (DJ set) @ echoplex

THURSDAYS : DON’T KNOCK THE ROCK 2010! @ Cinefamily/Silent Movie Theater “TARGET VIDEO PRESENTS: SO CAL PUNK ROCKERS , “Starting in the late ’70s, Target taped punk and post-punk bands in its studio space, in clubs, at parties and on the streets of the world at a time when music television was nonexistent. Their massive performance footage library is a sight to behold — and on Thursday, you’ll be treated to a solid blast of L.A./SoCal-centric clips from their archives: Screamers, BPeople, Suburban Lawns, Dickies, Zeros, Germs, Geza X, Plugz, CH3, TSOL and bunches more! Take a look at this Target clip of the Mau Maus here!” – Part Time Punks DJ Michael Stock will be spinning records before and after the show!”

Friday, July 30

Sunday, August 1

TONIGHT: WTTD Los Angeles recommendations for Thursday, July 15th, 2010

July 15th, 2010

Antibalas at Echoplex with the Sway Machinery opening (three thumbs up show from j.s.)

La Roux has really nice hair @ Club Nokia with Ana Calderon

Threadless West Coast Social @ The Echo Greg Dulli (DJ set)

(fukkin’ love love love this movie, and it has one of the best death scenes of all time in it.) Dogs In Space and We’re Livin’ on Dog Food @ Cinefamily “Unscreened in Los Angeles for ages, Richard Lowenstein’s seminal Australian post-punk masterpiece Dogs In Spacecomes to the Cinefamily in a brand-new HD restoration! Based on Lowenstein’s own whirlwind experiences as a young man in the heart of the late ’70s Melbourne scene, the film is a dense, chaotic stew of vignettes charting the endless 24/7 partying that takes place in a trashy communal house — a magical realm in which its wild, impoverished inhabitants do dope, go to shows, play shows, smash TVs, occasionally go to school, and generally live out a gloriously hedonistic life path. In the center of this storm is Sam (played by INXS frontman Michael Hutchence), the charismatic heroin addict whose Zen-like calm fares him well amongst a kingdom’s worth of other jokers, junkies and misfits. Part Time Punks main man DJ Michael Stock will be spinning records before and after the films!”

Jonathan Yeo’s ‘Porn In The USA’ opens to the public at Lazarides‘ Beverly Hills pop-up location. he does portraits of famous types by using collages from cut-up porno mags. ’nuff said. it’s a day thing, from 12-8.

Kelsey Brookes, Kime Buzzelli and Albert Reyes have a Total Eclipse of the art at New Image Art in WeHo from 7-10pm – stuff from them after the jump
