Friday Fun Links #21

December 4th, 2009

Animal Collective created a film… it will be featured at Sundance. Avey Tare says, “It’s kinda like a psychedelic film, it’s not like a narrative film or anything.” He explained. “There are more cohesive moments in it, but then there are some that are a little more abstract.” I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say it’s gonna be weird.

Here are the Top 5 YouTube sports moments of 2009. Little kids playing football O-M-G.

Hey LA! Rolling Stone magazine is opening a nightclub/restaurant on Hollywood & Highland. Here’s what one of the magazine partner’s has to say: “We are both excited and determined to bring the spirit of the magazine to life – the edginess, the coolness, the classiness and the timelessness – in making this venue a place to see and be seen in.” …. Hmm, a nightclub attached to an outdoor mall is a place to be seen? Yeaah… I’m gonna go hang with the elite crowd at Dave & Buster’s.

Trailer for Brooklyn’s Finest, the new movie from Antoine Fuqua, director of Training Day. It looks like a thug-life version of The Departed. Reasons why I post this:
- It features the return of Wesley “Dark Chocolate” Snipes
- I met Don Cheadle once and he was pretty cool
- I spotted Omar from The Wire in the background somewhere…

TONIGHT, TOMORROW AND SATURDAY: get your bloodlust on at Silent Movie Theater with Cinefamily

October 29th, 2009

Embodiment of Evil from coffin joe aka jose mojica marins

Cinefamily has programmed a great fucking month of quality (in other words, terrible) horror films and i’m truly sorry i haven’t been able to post more about the absolutely stellar run they’ve had. this week wraps up the series with a trilogy of terror (no, not the movie, but definitely the same general idea) tonight, tomorrow night, and Saturday. tickets for all three evenings are available via their calendar page here.
tonight there is a triple-feature with Hatchet (even though the amazing Chopping Mall is pictured in their flyer for some reason), Shakma and Night of the Demon.

Slasherpalooza gonzo slasher films at silent movie theater cinefamily
tomorrow night, and holy fuck buttons do i want to go to this but i’ll be too busy getting loaded, is a double feature from torture porn auteur José Mojica Marins, with uncensored runs of Hallucinations of a Deranged Mind and Embodiment of Evil (wonderfully NSFW trailer below).

and Halloween they close it all up with the Bollyween party and fundraiser. info from the site below the pic.

Cinefamily Bollyween fundraiser

This Hallow’s Eve, The Cinefamily joins forces with Dublab to throw the best Halloween party ever, Bollywood-style! One thing they really understand in India: every movie’s better with song-and-dance numbers — even horror movies! In that spirit, the Cinefamily premieres Bollyweird: The Movie — our very own feature-length video mashup celebrating the most horrifying, fantastic, costume-crazed and outlandish moments of vintage Indian musical madness ever. This isn’t just Bollywood, it’s Bollyweeeeeird. Then, once the movie’s over, we’re gonna clear the couches, light the incense, make a dance floor, start doing the electric vindaloo, and have a real monster mashala!

+ Drinks and dosas (provided by The Dosa Truck)!
+ Ghoulish giveaways!
+ Costume prizes!
+ DJ sets from the dublab “Bloodsucking” Sound System and Dr. Who Witchcraft Coven!
+ Live performances by freaks like:
12am – Bobb Bruno
1am – Private Beach + the pschedelic horror film Snake Mountain Colada!
2am – Golden Hits
+ The Phantom Photo Booth!

+ Terrifying tarot readings!
+ The best Halloween ever! It’s better than Halloween…its Bollyween!

TONIGHT: Suicide Is Easy at Koji’s (Hollywood and Highland)

August 24th, 2009

giving a shout out to some WTTD pals. they made a happy little film called Suicide Is Easy, and it recently won the Best Guerilla Film award at the 2009 Action On Film International film fest. there is a late night screening at Koji’s in the Hollywood and Highland complex tonight at 11pm. Rich Sturdevant, the director, wants me to say that it is dark and edgy like a car accident that you can’t take your eyes away from, but i’m not going to. the trailer for the film is on the Suicide Is Easy website here.

Artist to Admire: Jean Cocteau.

June 24th, 2009

Jean Cocteau the prettiest dresses are worn to be taken off
words to live by from amazing surrealist artist/filmmaker Jean Cocteau. he did stuff with smoke and mirrors that people still can’t do with computers today. for starters, i recommend any of his releases in the Criterion collection, particularly Beauty and the Beast i.e. La Belle et la Bête.

new photos of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and others from Tim Burton’s upcoming Alice In Wonderland live adaptation…

June 23rd, 2009

Tim Burton doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to remakes, so i hope he doesn’t fcuk it up i.e. Willy Wonka or Planet of the Apes, but if these images are any indication, this may be a truly lovely movie going experience. Alice In Wonderland is slated for release in March, 2010. (thanks Yuhmm.)

some men, you just can’t reach… TOMORROW NIGHT Cool Hand Luke opens the Cemetery Screenings Season at Hollywood Forever

May 15th, 2009

Cinespia is beginning it’s ninth (!) season at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery with a screening of Cool Hand Luke. not a lot of the planned films have been released yet, but immediately there are some great offerings with To Catch A Thief on the 23rd, Dazed and Confused (if you’ll be able to see it through the haze of smoke) on the 24th, and Sleeper on the 30th. you can bring wine and snacks and stuff, and it’s actually a lot of fun. plus the touch of morbidity from watching a movie in a cemetery will keep your date all snuggled up close or some lame shit like that i don’t know i usually go all alone and get really drunk and end up shouting my own commentary tracks at the projection. (don’t worry, it turns out they have plenty of security on site.)

TONIGHT: spend your Easter with the devil…

April 12th, 2009

the Silent Movie Theater is playing F. W. Murnau’s Faust with live musical accompaniment tonight. it’s to celebrate jesus. that’s okay, i guess i’ll give him today, since every other day in the year is to celebrate jesus satan, which is ALWAYS a way better party, anyway.

say, what's your name?

Faust (w/ live score by Cabeza De Vaca Arkestra)
Saturday, April 12th @ 8:00pm
Co-presented by L.A. Record
Tickets – $14
Buy Tickets!

A landmark of German Expressionism, Faust was Murnau’s final film in Germany, impressing Fox Studios so much that they lured him to the U.S. immediately afterwards.  The most expensive UFA film to date-taking six months to film, and costing over two million marks–Faust is full of bravura effects, including the magnificent signature visual of Mephistopheles towering over a miniature of Faust’s village like an enormous Angel of Death.  Faust was also the final collaboration with Emil Jannings (who also played the fired doorman in Murnau’s Last Laugh, and the title role in Tartuffe).  Jannings’ chameleonic performance is typically excellent, and, along with the film’s expert Rembrandt lighting and Bruegelesque imagery, makes Faust a complete cinematic experience never to be forgotten.  The evening’s live score is provided by Cabeza De Vaca Arkestra, an all-star L.A. ensemble featuring Nora Keyes, and members of Dios Malos.

Dir. F.W. Murnau, 1926, 35mm, 106 min.
