i’m somewhat disappointed in Crystal Castle’s new album as a whole… it suffers from 2010’s most rampant disease in the hipster swine community (no, not herpes), MGMT-itis, a distinct and significant lack of anything catchy. Alice Glass is cute and all, but i feel pretty much the same way about this video. (Hipster Runoff’s aka indie rock’s Perez Hilton has an amusing breakdown of it here, and this little treatise on trying to maintain non-sell-out-status in a self-marketing world is spot on.) C.C. is playing smell-A August 7th for Hard fest, tix are only sixty bucks, and with a killa lineup including Tiga, Soulwax, Green Velvet, Major Lazer, and Diplo, it’s likely to sell the fuck out (NOT LIKE CRYSTAL CASTLES though!!! they keep it REAL!!!) so get your tix here and get ‘em fast.

Downtown Standard is playing Marco Polo with Swimming with Sharks every second Saturday all summer long. this week it’s Mad Decent’s talent pool (yuk yuk yuk – look out for Diplo!) versus Tormenta Tropical’s latin infused mix(ers) and the first hundred people get in free with RSVP. so practice your mouth-to-mouth and get ready for sunburns in weird places. if you want to drive all the way to Westwood while you’re hungover, the backyard at W Los Angeles in Westwood also has a weekly Hangover Brunch and Backyard BBQ every Sunday from 11am to 5pm. i don’t think they have music or cheap beer, though, so fuck ‘em. I like The Very Best. I like them because their music is infectiously happy and it helps me through the frigid New York winters (waaaahhh I hate you LA). Here’s Very Best’s frontman Esau Mwamwaya with Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend doing “Warm Heart of Africa” and it looks like the two of them are having a blast poppin and lockin around the streets of NYC (is that canal street?). I smell a buddy-cop comedy in their future.

hey, hipster swine, the only thing the eighties was good for was hip-hop, so remember that next time you’re getting all dressed up in your neon tights. De La Soul’s 3 Feet High and Rising used to be something amazing and new, and even if it didn’t end up changing the world, it shure changed mine… it turns out that the release is a phat twenty years old now, so happy belated birthday and much respect. (man, i really miss sampling. way to ruin everything recording industry. you are the destroyers of all that is good.)
Animal Collective created a film… it will be featured at Sundance. Avey Tare says, “It’s kinda like a psychedelic film, it’s not like a narrative film or anything.” He explained. “There are more cohesive moments in it, but then there are some that are a little more abstract.” I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say it’s gonna be weird.

Hey LA! Rolling Stone magazine is opening a nightclub/restaurant on Hollywood & Highland. Here’s what one of the magazine partner’s has to say: “We are both excited and determined to bring the spirit of the magazine to life – the edginess, the coolness, the classiness and the timelessness – in making this venue a place to see and be seen in.” …. Hmm, a nightclub attached to an outdoor mall is a place to be seen? Yeaah… I’m gonna go hang with the elite crowd at Dave & Buster’s.
Trailer for Brooklyn’s Finest, the new movie from Antoine Fuqua, director of Training Day. It looks like a thug-life version of The Departed. Reasons why I post this:
- It features the return of Wesley “Dark Chocolate” Snipes
- I met Don Cheadle once and he was pretty cool
- I spotted Omar from The Wire in the background somewhere…
there hasn’t been this much buzz about a band since Crystal Castles (fuck Wavves, they don’t count). your next favorite band Cold Cave is hitting the West Coast tonight (tickets here) with a show at the Center For The Arts in Eagle Rock. it’s only ten bucks (eight in advance), and they’re giving away hand made mix tapes to the first hundred kids (yes, tapes are apparently cool again. god it just never stops does it hipster swine?) local heroes Abe Vigoda and Former Ghost are opening. tomorrow night they’re hitting the Casbah in San Diego (tickets here) if you feel like a road trip, and then they’re back in L.A. on Sunday at the Echo for Part Time Punks. Nite Jewel opens (tickets here). i’m guessing that all of the above will sell out, so get your tickets in advance, suckas. for reals.
