Zooey Deschanel is so cute. i just want to punch her in those sweet little eyes. She & Him (i.e. Zooey and M. Ward) are playing around LA over the next month with shows at Largo (sold out), the El Rey (sold out) and the Glass House (sold out) to warm up for Coachella on the 16th, which is apparently the only way you’ll get to see them. or you can just watch the new video for In The Sun.
i have no doubt this movie is going to be typical White Stripes magic. i was watching some of their music videos the other day, and i’m consistently amazed at how good everything they touch is. i mean, just look at this god damn flyer?!?!? there is a special screener this Monday evening at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood with director(s) Emmet Malloy doing a special speaking engagement. (leave it to the White Stripes to go and get a director(s) named fucking Emmet.) i wouldn’t be surprised if one or both of the Whites show up, too, by the way. so get your tickets here and snag them fast. more info after the jump.
this amazing song deserves a far better video than this. The Big Pink is hitting the El Rey tonight with the Jesus and Mary Chain-ish A Place To Bury Strangers, Active Child and IO Echo, and tickets are still available here. (Big Pink will be back for Coachella next month, too.)
Ok Go is playing the Music Box at Henry Fonda Theater (get your tickets here tomorrow), and i don’t really care too much about that, but it gives me a chance to post their awesome This Too Shall Pass videos that are such a big deal all over the internets and worlds wides webseses. here is the new one:
and here’s the older one, which isn’t executed nearly as well, but it’s still pretty damn neat.
if there’s one thing that jesus satan hates, it’s hate. tonight Manifest Equality opens at 1341 Vine St. in Hollywood with a splendiferous group show in support of equal rights for everyone, not just old white people. you better be there even if you don’t care too much about humanity and stuff, because the roster of artists (posted below) is absolutely stellar with pieces from Shepard Fairey, Harvey Pekar (American Splendor!), Ron English, Tim Biskup, El Mac, and a ton more awesome commies. (also, while i’m on the subject of hate, on March 29th that sonofabitchmurderingfuck Karl Rove is doing a paid speaking engagement at Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, so start rotting your tomatoes now, Los Angeles.)
first Orbital has kissed and made up (gross! they’re brothers!) to play Coachella, and now Leftfield, who made two of the best electronic albums of all time OF ALL TIME!! is reforming for a headlining set at the Rockness Festival in merry olde England. here’s hoping they come to the states sometime soon thereafter… look out, world. big beat is coming out, so you better get this party started. (thanks, Mixmag. seriously.) and yes, above is John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten from the Sex Pistols singing techno.
presales seem pretty fucking stupid for general admission venues, kind of misses the point when it’s not assigned seating or Radiohead selling out some tiny club in five seconds. regardless, there’s a presale today at 10am for Broken Social Scene’s May 3rd show at the Henry Fonda / Music Box. so that’s exciting. really, actually, they’re great live. the presale password is… (whispers) BROKEN. get your tickets here. (hey! i know that goth kid!)
If you haven’t heard of www.typographyserved.com yet, do yourself a favor and get there. Some of these people are so talented it’s discouraging, so if you’re a fledgling artist be prepared to cry Seriously it’s a treat for the eyes… and if the site looks familiar that’s because it’s powered by behance, another popular creative network worth a look or 10.
Jay Reatard was right, it ain’t gonna save him… no word on the cause of death yet, but what a god damn shame… he was only 29 and everyone and their mother is guessing overdose. at least for someone so young, he left behind a surmountable volume of music. pour one out 4 tha homiez, y’all… what a blow to the indie world. (*update – couple touching-ish tributes from Los Angelenos – Beck here with Jay’s cover of Gamma Ray – and Amoeba Records with a tribute here and photos from his Hollywood Amoeba show here.)
Mew is amazing every time i see them and they’re playing the Henry Fonda tonight with The Outline. tickets are still available here at a decent price of only $18, so if you aren’t already committed to Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, then these boys are a fine alternative.
