not too surprisingly, indie rock’s elder statesmen Dinosaur Jr. are returning tonight to Los Angeles after two sold out shows at the Troubadour in June. they’re playing the House of Blues Sunset Strip, and the place will be lucky to still be standing after J., Lou and Murph finish plugging in those purple amps. i’ve said it before, and i’ll say it again. loudest fucking band in America. (My Bloody Valentine doesn’t count, they’re from the Old Country.)
i imagine at this point that the inside of J. Mascis’ ears sounds like the scene in Fight Club when Ed Norton gets done shooting a bullet through his mouth and there’s nothing but ringing while people mouth things to him and look worried…

So what do you do When God Gives You Ugly? give it back and say, “No Thank You Very Much.” Atmosphere, on the other hand, composed of the endlessly talented producer/rappers Slug & Ant, has decided to take ugly and run with it on a North American tour. tonight they’re hitting the city of sin with a show at House of Blues LV, and tomorrow night they stop on by in sunny Los Angeles at the Hollywood Palladium. so ladies leave your makeup at home and fellas go a day without tweezing your nose hairs. it’s bound to be an ugly sort of evening. special guests Eyedea & Abilities (fuck yeah, they’re sick too) and Attracted to Gods are, however, quite lovely to look at. one of my favorite moments in Coachella history was Bauhaus’ reunion performance in 2005, with gothtastic frontman Peter Murphy entering the stage hanging upside down a la drah-coo-la while singing their epic Bela Lugosi’s Dead in its entirety. (that’s a long time to hang upside down, folks.) most everyone else in the world who tried something with that level of possible cheese factor would have crashed and burned, but i’m pretty sure that Murphy actually drinks human blood, and it simply laid the groundwork for an absolutely stellar performance from one of the most influential bands in the world. the set was amazing, Murphy is amazing, and this should be a performance to die for (hey! look at that! more goth jokes! it’s like shooting fish in a barrel, kids). Murphy is playing the House of Blues Sunset Strip tonight, and it’s a three thumbs up show from jesus satan.

sorry folks, been out of touch a bit… nursing a heartbreak the last couple of days because TINT left us for the Big Apple. enough time for mourning… it’s time to move on. (at least that’s what my therapist says.)
in the meantime there have been a few things that made it past me, including Mos Def hitting the House of Blues Sunset Strip tonight. should be a good show, and i hope that TINT is really jealous because he can’t go, especially because there will probably be a bunch of Def’s famous A-list friends there, and you know how much TINT likes to hob knob.
so check it hell-A! word to your mutha! (how was that, TINT? black enough for you? no? too bad cause you left just like all the rest…)

if you like to smoke a little of the bad, tonight is the best night ever to get ripped and see some dub with Mad Professor, Warchurch & Mudluscious at the House of Blues on Sunset. Mad Professor made one of my favorite albums of all time, No Protection, a Mad Professor Vs. Massive Attack (who is headlining the Bestival festival in the UK this September… fuck if that doesn’t look amazing…) collection of remixes that is unbelievably good for chilling in bed while trying to drift off to sleep after a night of debauchery and/or hallucinogenics. (that’s a good thing.)
