congratulations to the winner of our Swell Season/She & Him/Bird and the Bee contest, Miss Allison Klein of Los Angeles. it was too tough of a decision for us, you have no idea the unique horror of judging so many impossibly cute Zooey Deschanel pictures, so we decided to go with the image above by throwing darts at our computer screen. (that bitch stole my dog’s look!!! you don’t want to piss off Mr Fluffy, Zooey. it’ll be a battle of adorable that even YOU can’t win.) thanks to all who entered! some of the more choice entries are posted below, but beware, know that to stare too long into those doe eyes is too risk your very soul.

helllllllloooooo Los Angeles, j.s. has been kind of productive lately and i went and wrote a screenplay for a charmingly disturbing full-length feature called Envisage. (well, a third of one, anyway. annnnndddd i’m also doing the cinematography for it.) well, we’re po’ folk, so in order to fund the thing, we’re having a party slash money grab the afternoon of Sunday, July 18th, more info on the flyers below. so, come on by, say hello and then give us lots of money. please? c’mon, don’t make me get down on my knees, that life is behind me now…

i love her. i really, really do. she’s so full of angst-y cuteness. Zola Jesus is playing the Wiltern on July 31st, opening up for Wolf Parade (tickets here – or here - Moools is opening, too, whoever the hell that is). she also snagged the opening slot for Fever Ray’s European tour, so it’s probably worth it to pick up some tickets for Wolf Parade because she won’t be around these parts for a long while afterwards. here’s a new video to keep us company through the cold nights of, uh, summer, in the meantime.

the Downtown Art Walk is tonight, and it is going to be cuh-ray-zee, because as the warm summer season arrives, there are just THAT many more drunk people out in the streets. check out our recent gallery from June’s night of debauchery for plenty of porn slash art, plus lots of alcohol-fueled shenanigans (although that happened mostly behind the shutter). jesus satan will see you there, and he might just take your picture if you’re lucky… or if you’re willing to take your clothes off for free.

definitely going to be checking out Dennis Dutzi’s posthumous fund-raiser at the Pharmaka gallery. pretty amazing Socal portraiture, and the benefits go to the Colors of Hope charity for support of cancer patients and their families.

ALSO definitely going to be checking out Christy Rogers‘ Siren collection at the Spring Arts (453 S. Spring St., 90013) Collective group show. she takes underwater portraits of herself as dreamlike, drowning nudes (sort of like my dreams every night) and some of it is really beautiful stuff.

i can’t think of a better way to celebrate America then by living in the past. there’s a big line up of rockabilly swingers (that would be an amazing porn site) at Hootenanny 2009… Reverend Horton Heat, Los Lobos (awesome), Nekromantix (though they’re not on the flier), HorrorPops, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Supersuckers, Blasters, 3 Bad Jacks, Roger Alan Wade, Lee Rocker, Dusty Rhodes and the River Band and plenty more at the Oak Canyon Ranch in Irvine, CA. (there’s an excellent old video from the Rev Horton Heat below this massive flier. fun to watch if only for it’s punk rock production value, so check it out.)
