The Drifter Contest Giveaway!

November 25th, 2009

DRIFTER
Gobble gobble bitches! It’s almost turkey time and you know what that means… ‘Tis the season for intense food comas, awkward war stories from Uncle Ed, fun trips through airport security, and spending time with the people you love most..your alcoholic friends on Wednesday night. But since we know the REAL spirit of the season is giving, we’d like to give something back to you guys. So who likes free stuff?

The Drifter, coming to DVD on December 8th, is a different kind of surf movie. It tells the story of Rob Machado’s journey to go way beyond his comfort zone and become completely isolated from the world with his own thoughts and dreams. Kinda like what Kanye West did with his career. “The Drifter is a visual metaphor for a free spirit’s conscious abandonment of the worldly traps of modern life as he searches for the inner freedom and spiritual joy offered by a life of renunciation

So here’s what we’re giving away to ONE lucky winner (must be from the US):
- 1 copy of The Drifter on DVD
- 1 bar of Rob’s own organic blend of surf wax (see below)
- 1 copy of the latest issue of FILTER, which includes a sweet Drifter feature

Oh and look at this ridiculous soundtrack for the flick:
Jon Swift
Rob Machado
Stardeath & White Dwarfs
The Black Keys
By The Fireside
The Raconteurs
Midlake
Iron & Wine
Tegan & Sara
Jon and Roy
The Len Brown Society
Dr. Dog
Brett Dennen
Bon Iver
Jose Gonzalez
MGMT
Yeasayer
The Shins

All you have to do to enter is comment on this post wishing us an AMAZING Happy Thanksgiving and we’ll select a winner at random with our patented eenie-meenie-miney-moe system. Good luck and Happy Holidays!

Debt Begins At Twenty

Thursday, March 26th @ 8:00pm
SERIES: POST-PUNK JUNK
Co-presented by Don’t Knock The Rock, Part Time Punks, KXLU 88.9fm, L.A. Record and Pimpadelic Wonderland

The legendary concert film Urgh! A Music War is the cinematic equivalent of a tried-and-true mixtape: a non-stop whirlwind of great bands spanning the new wave/punk gamut.  In 1980, director Derek Burbidge filmed jam-packed bills in L.A., NYC, London and France, to capture in a Woodstock-ian presentation the bands on the cutting edge of rock and synthpop: Devo, Dead Kennedys, X, The Cramps, Oingo Boingo, Gang of Four, The Police, Wall of Voodoo, Klaus Nomi, Gary Numan, OMD, Pere Ubu, Magazine and more.  Rarely were these bands–some of whom lasted a very short time–afforded the full lavish film shoot treatment, so Urgh! is a rare close-up peek at some of the most furious bands of the era at the peak of their powers, as well as an intriguing time-capsule snapshot of the era’s rock fans, decked out in period gear and acting extra-wacky for the camera.  Also showing is Debt Begins At Twenty, a half-fiction, half-documentary look at the emerging Pittsburgh scene in 1980.

Urgh! A Music War  Dir. Derek Burbidge, 1982, 35mm, 122 min.
Debt Begins At Twenty  Dir. Stephanie Beroes, 1980, 16mm, 40 min.
