TONIGHT: see some dirty, drugged-up hippies at the Steve Allen Theater
talk about a bad trip! TONIGHT Grindhouse presents the cult classic An American Hippie In Israel at the Steve Allen Theater. the cheeseball psychedelic masterpiece of terrible is screening after thirty-one years of obscurity. seems like it will probably be full of antidisestablishmentarianism. and also drugs. lots of drugs. i have no idea why but The Ettes are also bringing their Nashville lo-fi garage rock to the night. this seems like a whole lot of amazing for only $10, and movies actually sell out at the Steve Allen a lot so get your tickets in advance here. (The Ettes are also playing tomorrow night at the Echo - tickets here for only $8.) “shut your ass!” (*update: there are cheaper tickets available through Goldstar here. get them fast, it stops a few hours before the show.)

TONIGHT, TOMORROW AND SATURDAY: get your bloodlust on at Silent Movie Theater with Cinefamily
Cinefamily has programmed a great fucking month of quality (in other words, terrible) horror films and i’m truly sorry i haven’t been able to post more about the absolutely stellar run they’ve had. this week wraps up the series with a trilogy of terror (no, not the movie, but definitely the same general idea) tonight, tomorrow night, and Saturday. tickets for all three evenings are available via their calendar page here.
tonight there is a triple-feature with Hatchet (even though the amazing Chopping Mall is pictured in their flyer for some reason), Shakma and Night of the Demon.

tomorrow night, and holy fuck buttons do i want to go to this but i’ll be too busy getting loaded, is a double feature from torture porn auteur José Mojica Marins, with uncensored runs of Hallucinations of a Deranged Mind and Embodiment of Evil (wonderfully NSFW trailer below).
and Halloween they close it all up with the Bollyween party and fundraiser. info from the site below the pic.
This Hallow’s Eve, The Cinefamily joins forces with Dublab to throw the best Halloween party ever, Bollywood-style! One thing they really understand in India: every movie’s better with song-and-dance numbers — even horror movies! In that spirit, the Cinefamily premieres Bollyweird: The Movie — our very own feature-length video mashup celebrating the most horrifying, fantastic, costume-crazed and outlandish moments of vintage Indian musical madness ever. This isn’t just Bollywood, it’s Bollyweeeeeird. Then, once the movie’s over, we’re gonna clear the couches, light the incense, make a dance floor, start doing the electric vindaloo, and have a real monster mashala!
+ Drinks and dosas (provided by The Dosa Truck)!
+ Ghoulish giveaways!
+ Costume prizes!
+ DJ sets from the dublab “Bloodsucking” Sound System and Dr. Who Witchcraft Coven!
+ Live performances by freaks like:
12am – Bobb Bruno
1am – Private Beach + the pschedelic horror film Snake Mountain Colada!
2am – Golden Hits
+ The Phantom Photo Booth!
+ Franken Stand’s vegan hot dogs!
+ Terrifying tarot readings!
+ The best Halloween ever! It’s better than Halloween…its Bollyween!

Johnny Depp is mad as a hatter… get it? dumb puns aside, the new Alice In Wonderland trailer makes me very happy…
more Tim Burton Alice In Wonderland awesomeness has been unveiled. this trailer is absolutely made of amazing… (it takes a moment to load.)
stop michael bay before it’s too late… boycott transformers 2
ok you fcuks. i know that I didn’t go see transformers 2 over the weekend, so ONE OF YOU DID. well? i’m waiting? what i don’t think you people realize is that with every dollar you give to this director for transforming movies into giant pieces of shit, he gains just that much more influence, which means even MORE MOVIES THAT ARE TRANSFORMED INTO GIANT PIECES OF SHIT. so stop, right now, before i take away your privileges. and your car keys, because if you’re going to see it, then you’re clearly too drunk to drive.
transfomers 2 took in more than motherfcuking $200 million over the weekend, and i for one am going to do my part to stop the madness. here are links to awful yet hilarious reviews from pretty much everyone in the world who has seen it. so please, do your part to heal the world, and pass this on to anyone and everyone you know that still has a job and can afford to spend fifteen bucks at a movie. ROGER EBERT’S amazing review is a great place to start, and he follows it up with a sequel of his own on his blog here. the Awl discusses the only intersting part of the movie i.e. Megan Fox’s tits here, Harry Knowles from Ain’t It Cool bitches about it here and you know if he doesn’t like it the fucking thing must be terrible, The Onion warns of a dark future here, some interesting questions that need to be answered from The Stranger here, and the lovely as always Topless Robot discusses in length the unholy Transformers/michael bay union here, here, here and here.
at any rate, fuck you, michael bay. stop ruining my childhood.
Artist To Admire: Olly Moss.
sadly, i came to Olly Moss through hipster swine indie multiconglomerate Threadless, but to his credit, Moss’ In Case Of Zombies design was the very first Threadless shirt to hook me in like heroin way back when… Threadless has kind of lost its way over the last couple years, but Moss is still right on track.
Moss takes a big ol’ spoonful of influence from Saul Bass‘ iconic movie poster and title design work, and spices it all up with a heaping dash of clever. really, his whole porftolio from prints to graphics to t-shirts is wonderfully sardonic, whimsical stuff, and i wish i could post it all, but instead you’re going to have to go to his website to see that this Moss sure gathers a lot of rock! ha! Moss? rock? ’cause… the… rock gathers no… his name is… oh fucking forget it.
anyways, you all know how much i like art that celebrates my sadly misspent childhood. now it’s “culturally relevant”! so go to his site and buy stuff.

(p.s. for a fun game, if you look through the models on the Threadless site, you’ll find an ex-gf of jesus satan…. but i’m not tellin’ who. i’ll leave that up to the police to figure out… ahhh, internet. when will you let me escape my past?)
new photos of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and others from Tim Burton’s upcoming Alice In Wonderland live adaptation…
Tim Burton doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to remakes, so i hope he doesn’t fcuk it up i.e. Willy Wonka or Planet of the Apes, but if these images are any indication, this may be a truly lovely movie going experience. Alice In Wonderland is slated for release in March, 2010. (thanks Yuhmm.)
TONIGHT: ANVIL is peaking past their prime at the Fairfax Cinemas at 8pm
Anvil from ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL is playing tonight at the Fairfax Regency Cinema 3 on Fairfax and Beverly … i’ve been wanting to see this movie real bad cause it’s all uplifting about not giving up and all sorts of flowery shit like that sort of like American Movie that everyone was bonkers over until everyone involved faded back into obscurity.
Mal as the Green Lantern?
wow. just… wow.
fan film hyping Nathan Fillion (Captain Mal Reynolds from the great sci-fi show Serenity) as a Hal Jordan possibility in the planned Green Lantern movie. if a fan with a little time on his/her hands can make something so spectacular, why do studio produced big-budget films constantly suck? (thanks io9)
