TONIGHT, TOMORROW AND SATURDAY: get your bloodlust on at Silent Movie Theater with Cinefamily

October 29th, 2009

Embodiment of Evil from coffin joe aka jose mojica marins

Cinefamily has programmed a great fucking month of quality (in other words, terrible) horror films and i’m truly sorry i haven’t been able to post more about the absolutely stellar run they’ve had. this week wraps up the series with a trilogy of terror (no, not the movie, but definitely the same general idea) tonight, tomorrow night, and Saturday. tickets for all three evenings are available via their calendar page here.
tonight there is a triple-feature with Hatchet (even though the amazing Chopping Mall is pictured in their flyer for some reason), Shakma and Night of the Demon.

Slasherpalooza gonzo slasher films at silent movie theater cinefamily
tomorrow night, and holy fuck buttons do i want to go to this but i’ll be too busy getting loaded, is a double feature from torture porn auteur José Mojica Marins, with uncensored runs of Hallucinations of a Deranged Mind and Embodiment of Evil (wonderfully NSFW trailer below).

and Halloween they close it all up with the Bollyween party and fundraiser. info from the site below the pic.

Cinefamily Bollyween fundraiser

This Hallow’s Eve, The Cinefamily joins forces with Dublab to throw the best Halloween party ever, Bollywood-style! One thing they really understand in India: every movie’s better with song-and-dance numbers — even horror movies! In that spirit, the Cinefamily premieres Bollyweird: The Movie — our very own feature-length video mashup celebrating the most horrifying, fantastic, costume-crazed and outlandish moments of vintage Indian musical madness ever. This isn’t just Bollywood, it’s Bollyweeeeeird. Then, once the movie’s over, we’re gonna clear the couches, light the incense, make a dance floor, start doing the electric vindaloo, and have a real monster mashala!

+ Drinks and dosas (provided by The Dosa Truck)!
+ Ghoulish giveaways!
+ Costume prizes!
+ DJ sets from the dublab “Bloodsucking” Sound System and Dr. Who Witchcraft Coven!
+ Live performances by freaks like:
12am – Bobb Bruno
1am – Private Beach + the pschedelic horror film Snake Mountain Colada!
2am – Golden Hits
+ The Phantom Photo Booth!
+ Franken Stand’s vegan hot dogs!
+ Terrifying tarot readings!
+ The best Halloween ever! It’s better than Halloween…its Bollyween!

Need a Good Time-Suck?

June 2nd, 2009

Little help?

Little help?

You should be able to kill at least half your workday with this gem from Empire magazine.

Hidden in one big canvas are images depicting the titles of 50 movies that have come out in 20 years since Empire published its first issue.

Virgin did something similar a few years ago with bands instead of movies. This one is more user-friendly with actual interactive elements that let you type in your answers and find out if they’re right or wrong. It’ll also keep track of how many you’ve gotten correct and gray them out so you can narrow your focus to the really tricky ones.

I’m stuck at 42/50. (Including the one to the right. Any ideas?) And so far there’s only been one movie I’ve never heard of, which is pretty amazing considering my impressive lack of movie knowledge.

Check it out.

Occult LA: Esoteric Cinema In The Southland

March 15th, 2009

the Cinefamily is presenting Occult LA: Esoteric Cinema In The Southland at the Silent Movie Theater this Tuesday, March 17th. looks spooky. or something.

just got her nails did...Author Erik Davis (”The Visionary State: A Journey Through California’s Spiritual Landscape”) returns for another night of talks and films devoted to Southern California’s alternative spiritual culture.  Angelino occultism has many sources, but one of the most important is the cinematic imagination, whose mystic and psychedelic developments Davis will trace through a collection of clips and short films drawn from experimental (Maya Deren’s Meshes of the Afternoon), B-movie (The Trip), and mainstream Hollywood fare (SecondsHead).  The evening’s second half will be hosted by Process Books publisher Jodi Wille, who will present unusual footage of LA’s wild and wooly spiritual fringe, including rare clips from the Universal World Church and the Source Family. Other guest presenters include Maja D’Aoust (Philosophical Research Society), Paul Nugent (the Aetherius Society), and Kenneth Anger collaborator Brian Butler, who will show some ultra-rare footage of the notorious Angelino witch Cameron.  The evening’s program is held in conjunction with ModCom’s “City of the Seekers” tour on March 13 (tour tickets available here.)

Co-presented by Process Books and L.A. Conservancy/ModCom
Tickets – $13
