jesus satan prefers his sugary indie pop with a bittersweet under-taste but i know you non-depressed kids out there are down with the Vampire Weekend, so here’s a quick shout out to let you know that the nerdy boys are adding a show at the Fox Theater in Pomona on April 14th. there is a presale for tickets starting at 10am PST today with the password CONTRA. damn i loved that game when i was a kid. Konami Code 4eva. (ticket link here) oh, and p.s., you can stream their entire new album (Contra) on their Myspace page here.
this is too amazing. i love Think Geek. they have that Tauntaun Sleeping Bag that we mentioned way back when for April Fool’s Day, too, and now it’s real. i did most of my xxxmas shopping there, and now that i’ve blogged about it, this holiday is a total tax write off! jesus satan, sticking it to the man since 1976.
this song is totally a big shitty whatev… i don’t know about you, but when i used to play my 8-bit NES, i turned down my TV and listened to some real music, i.e. fucking Metallica, so this whole 8-bit soundtrack resurgence thing is kind of getting on my nerves. nonetheless, what’s absolutely insane about this video is that this is all done in the real world with real legos. the band, Rymdreglage (whatever the hell that means… damn Norwegians and their goofy swedish meatball names) claims that it took more than 1500 hours of physical work, which is about how long it took me to beat Metroid. if only i had spent my time as wisely… nahhhhhhh, then my childhood (early twenties) would have sucked… (thanks, 40fakes.)
Tetris was born two months before me, proving that the summer of 1984 produced at least two of the world’s greatest pop icons. Today we celebrate the 25th birthday of the game that took weeks away from our lives. The game that had me dreaming of Russian folk music in Mono. The game that turned everyday objects into a sea of oddly shaped puzzle pieces. And most of all, the game that keeps you craving for one. more. vertical piece. (wikipedia says: “Only the Itetromino has the capacity to clear four lines simultaneously, and this is referred to as a “tetris”.” …. Yes… a “tetris”… ohhh…ooo..mmm).
To this day, nothing comes close to this game in terms of relentlessly-addicting fun.
“Playing the game is an exercise in futility. You can never win. The game is set up so that the blocks fall increasingly faster, until it catches up with you. The goal, then, is the continued pursuit of besting your previous high score. (This is classic addict behavior — “I want my highs to get higher and higher.”)”
Play a Flash version of the game here. Although nothing’s the same as the original.
