fuck that. Mark Linkous, sole driving force of Sparklehorse, and collaborator on the Dark Night of the Soul Dangermouse project with David Lynch, has taken his own life. fuck that. seriously. FUCK. THAT…… you had much more to offer this world, Mark. regardless, thanks for the music, and peace be with you… i guess you needed it. pour one out 4 tha homiez, y’all. (if you’re not familiar with Sparklehorse, It’s A Wonderful Life is one of the best albums ever made, and it’s a more than fitting requiem.)
Jay Reatard was right, it ain’t gonna save him… no word on the cause of death yet, but what a god damn shame… he was only 29 and everyone and their mother is guessing overdose. at least for someone so young, he left behind a surmountable volume of music. pour one out 4 tha homiez, y’all… what a blow to the indie world. (*update – couple touching-ish tributes from Los Angelenos – Beck here with Jay’s cover of Gamma Ray – and Amoeba Records with a tribute here and photos from his Hollywood Amoeba show here.)
rest in peace, Captain Louis Vincent Albano. the eighties wouldn’t have been the same without you, and your rubberbands will be strangely missed.
also, in reference to the PSA below, it sure seemed like you did a LOT of drugs, so hopefully you’re not in hell. of course, if heaven won’t have you, then why would anyone want to go there anyway? pour one out 4 tha homiez, y’all…
Irving Penn died yesterday. he was an amazing photographer at the center of the fashion industry for decades, and his simple, graphic style contrasted beautifully with complex subject matter and theme. plus he did a lot of nudes. there is an Irving Penn retrospective right now at the Getty (1200 Getty Center Drive, Los Angeles, 90049. (310) 440-7330) through mid-January if you would like to mourn surrounded by his art. pour one out 4 tha homiez y’all, and dedicate the next time you’re vogueing to him. (more images after the jump.)
honestly, i’m not too sure why i care, but Patrick Swayze has died from his battle with cancer. although he was pretty amazing in Donnie Darko. Road House kind of ruled, too. and actually i really liked Next of Kin when i was a kid. oh shit! he was in The Outsiders?!?!?!? how could i forget Point Break?!?!?! whaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!! Patrick Swayze died!!!! whaaaaaaaaa!!!! whhaaaaa!!!! pour one out 4 tha homiez, y’all.
this guy defined a whole decade of teen comedy, and thus influenced a whole generation. i’ll let the movie posters speak for themselves. rest in pieces, John Hughes. teen angst won’t be the same without you. (but it will still be very funny…)
gorgeous song and video for an acoustic version of ‘Chem Trails’ from Beck’s Modern Guilt album. watch it here, or check it on his site, and while you’re there, take a look at a few videos Beck posted dedicated to recently deceased choreographer Merce Cunningham, whom strippers everywhere can thank for progressing modern dance post ballet. pour one out 4 tha homiez.
whoa. this stuff does happen in threes. first Ed McMahon, then today Farrah Fawcett, and now Michael Jackson. according to everyone but CNN (who says he’s only in a coma… [UPDATE: CNN WAS WRONG]), Michael Jackson has died of a cardiac arrest. who are we supposed to make child molestation jokes about now? won’t someone think of the children?
jesus satan is actually sad… give me a moment. this emotion is new to me. Farrah Fawcett has passed on to that pharmacy in the sky. she was an integral part of America’s budding sexuality, and the world will thank her for it forever. somehow i imagine this pin-up will still be tacked to the walls of future space ships for generations to come. pour one out for the homiez.
from TINT: Another one bites the dust. RIP miss Fawcett, you were a sex symbol before my time but thanks to the internet I can “enjoy” you forever:
Ed McMahon is introducing Johnny Carson every night in heaven. or hell. i’m not sure which. Ed McMahon died last night… guess he doesn’t have to worry too much about bankruptcy, anymore. pour out one for the homiez…
