Artists To Admire: David Maisel – who appears at the Annenberg Space for Photography on Thursday, May 20th

May 13th, 2010

david maisel history's shadowhis_gr1_b_02

David Maisel has dedicated two decades of his life to capturing aerial images centered on the impact of human interaction with our natural environment, which is a hell of a lot more than i’ve done. his photography appears to be a sublime abstract experience, a Rothko-esque exploration of color, line and shape, until you realize that the extended palette is the result of chemical pollutions unleashed on the landscape and the graphic elements are scars cut deep into the earth by crass mercantilism. if that’s too heavy for you, don’t worry, he relaxes with more personal projects. his Library of Dust series, for instance, explores the corrosive beauty of oxidizing canisters that are full of the unclaimed ashes of deceased mental patients from an abandoned mental asylum. fun! sure, it’s a little depressing, but it’s important work, and Maisel has an incredible eye for compositional detail with imagery that packs a helluva visual impact. pretty AND message-y… just like me.
Thursday, May 20th, the Annenberg Space for Photography is continuing it’s IRIS Nights Lecture Series with “Black Maps” – An Evening with David Maisel from 6.30 to 8pm. it’s free, so register for the night here and do it quickly because space fills up fast. more images and more information about Maisel from the Annenberg site after the jump.

terry richardson with obama t bone t-bone tbone picture image

Terry Richardson leads the most charmed life ever, that lucky motherfucker. this is an extended behind the scenes of Richardson shooting the new 2010 Pirelli Calendar, a fairly esteemed job in the world of photography, for reasons that are pretty evident. carpe diem, bro. carpe fucking diem. (video is most certainly NSFW)

good morning world! the fluorescent office lights say hello! (in my day all we had was 256 colors in our video games and we liked it!)

October 1st, 2009

this song is totally a big shitty whatev… i don’t know about you, but when i used to play my 8-bit NES, i turned down my TV and listened to some real music, i.e. fucking Metallica, so this whole 8-bit soundtrack resurgence thing is kind of getting on my nerves. nonetheless, what’s absolutely insane about this video is that this is all done in the real world with real legos. the band, Rymdreglage (whatever the hell that means… damn Norwegians and their goofy swedish meatball names) claims that it took more than 1500 hours of physical work, which is about how long it took me to beat Metroid. if only i had spent my time as wisely… nahhhhhhh, then my childhood (early twenties) would have sucked… (thanks, 40fakes.)

“Music is meant to be heard” – Kid Koala

I like his style. The album, The Slew: 100%, is tons of fun (seriously get it and just invite people over to drink whiskey with you) and Koala is giving it away for free on his website to get people excited for his tour. He’s playing gigs with the ex-Wolfmother drummer and bassist:

Artist to Admire: Vincent Bousserez.

September 9th, 2009

Mr. Bousserez is an incredible French photographer who seems to be delving into the design/typography realm as well. His website has a great series called “Plastic Life” featuring little figurines doing everyday things on a teeeeeny tiny stage. Amazing eye for detail:
