Jesus Lizard – Panic In Cicero

old-school punk bands from Chicago equals awesome. the unstoppable force of Jesus Lizard singer David Yow were legendary in my hometown, ao don’t waste this chance to see them since they broke up a while ago because they were old and not making any money until that Touch and Go anniversary show got ‘em back together but who knows for how long? hitting the Henry Fonda tonight.

Try as I might, I couldn’t suppress the urge to show these to the world. Amazing vinyl sunglasses with stainless steel temples decorated with old film strips of your choice… that’s right, porno movie stills from the 50s and 60s are all the rage now. Go check them out at Tipton Eyeworks. The interesting part of the glasses (besides having bettie page’s caboose half an inch from your face at all times) is the process through which they acquire the vinyl. Since they go through so much of it, the company arranged for a Czech plant to press new records for unknown musicians (the musicians started as friends, now it’s spreading). When the records are done, they sell them, give them away, donate copies to the band, and finally use the leftovers for the glasses. Sweet huh? If you want your records shipped around Europe, Asia and even North America… shoot ‘em an email… can’t hurt to ask right?

“All Cinematique frames are decorated with strips of film. A visible piece of story telling history graces the temple of every frame. The temples are made by recycling 35mm and 16mm movies. Tipton makes no discretion concerning the media on the film. Some of the film is collected from cinemas and date from after 1989 (fall of Communism in Hungary). Other rolls are purchased at the flea market or through other channels. The scenes are carefully selected for visibility. This means that we search for footage that is high in contrast to ensure a stunning temple. We can even make custom temples with film of your choice. Tipton Eyeworks has recently been acquiring vintage 16mm films. Topics include skiing movies from the 1980’s (featuring Glen Ellen in Vermont) and nature films from the 1970’s. Another large addition to our collection is stag movies (erotic and explicit in nature) from the 1950’s and 1960’s. These stag movies are available only on request.”

Tortoise – Adverse Camber (Autechre Remix)

tonight Tortoise is playing a free show at Amoeba Records in Hollywood at 6pm for those poor bastards (i.e. YOU) that didn’t get tickets for the sold out show this Saturday night with Earthless at the Troubadour. there’s likely to be a line tonight, so if you’re STILL a poor bastard because you can’t get in to Amoeba either, then you’re only KIND OF a poor bastard because Amoeba is going to stream the show for you live here. that way everyone gets to share. isn’t that nice of them? don’t forget to send them a thank you letter, or next time they might not get you anything at all.

Tortoise – July 11th at the Troubadour
A historic band for indie rock, this Chicago band is credited with “revolutionizing” American indie rock in the mid-’90s by emphasizing the incorporation of a variety of left-field music genres from the past 20 years, like Krautrock, dub, avant-garde jazz, classical minimalism, ambient and space music, film music, and British electronica instead of the punk and rock & roll influences–which had dominated indie rock for years before. While hard to categorize this mostly instrumental band, it seems the overall consensus of the genre has been dubbed ‘post-rock’. They have a new album out next month Beacons of Ancestorship–long awaited since their last release in ‘06. They will bring you all the live music you can handle! Another not-to-miss.

Elvis Costello – What’s So Funny ’bout Peace, Love and Understanding?

Amoeba Records in Hollywood has been booking some stellar acts lately, and they don’t get much bigger, at least in terms of playing a record store, than the venerable Elvis Costello, who is doing a free set tonight at 8pm (presumably to warm up for his upcoming show at the Greek on August 18th). if you can get in, then you can get a limited edition screenprinted poster of the gig, as well as have Costello sign copies of his new album, ‘Secret, Profane and Sugarcane’. although, unless you’re sitting there right now (which i’m assuming you’re not unless you just got one of those new iPhones i’ve been hearing about lately) the chances are pretty nil that you’ll make it inside. but that’s okay, because Amoeba is all smart and shit and is offering a live streaming of the performance online through their website here. i love Amoeba, even if they did manage to kill off every single other independent record store in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. ah, Aron’s Records, i do miss you so.

Z-Trip – Take Two Copies (Feat. Busdriver)

Busdriver is making a couple stops in town (get it?) with a free teaser show tonight at Amoeba Records in Hollywood and he follows tomorrow night with a full show at the Knitting Factory. i’m not a big fan of linguistic gymnastics, and i wish he would take a breath once in a while… it’s kind of like heavy metal guitarists shredding for no reason, but i his lyrics are smart, and his beats are fun, so i recommend this one. (actually reminds me of a less hallucinogenic Subtle.)

Gnomon Gallery has the Pixologic Action Heroes collective opening from a grip of up and coming fantasy artists

Space 15 Twenty has a little show with “a very special night of sound and design” and the only US appearance of Michel Vedette and his Automatic Body Dancing Club. flyer and video below (skip ahead to about 2.20 minutes… lord help us it looks like he’s trying to bring back an even more white people version of the fucking macarena.) there’s also an after party at the Mountain Bar with Nitedog and Justin Miller from DFA.

Coop is having a signing event in the afternoon from 2-5pm at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City. i’ve posted frequently about the show that opened last week, and we should have pics from the event up soon.

Crewest is having a celebration for The Legendary Belmont Tunnel with “A tribute to the birthplace of Los Angeles Graffit Art”. there are a ton of artists, which always means a LOT of people will be there.

lastly, the Hive Gallery has it’s montly group opening, and while they ridiculously charge $8 at the door, there always is a ton of fun stuff there to see, plus lots of people, and if the art doesn’t do it for you, maybe the burlesque show will. info below.
