talk about a bad trip! Tuesday, January 19th the cheeseball psychedelia of An American Hippie In Israel is screening after thirty-one years of obscurity at the Steve Allen Theater. seems like it will be full of antidisestablishmentarianism. and also drugs. lots of drugs. i have no idea why but The Ettes are also bringing their Nashville lo-fi garage rock to the night. this seems like a whole lot of amazing for only $10, and movies actually sell out at the Steve Allen a lot so get your tickets in advance here. so Dan Deacon’s first couple albums are a tough listen, no fooling, but man oh man if Bromst isn’t one of my favorite albums of the year, i don’t know what is what. tonight he takes his one-man frenzy to the Echo, and he and opening band Nuclear Power Pants reprise their fun-filled evening with another fun-filled evening at the Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock. three thumbs up show from jesus satan.
New Yorkers keep an eye out, too, he’ll be playing two dates mid-November at the Rennsselaer Polytechnic Institute and the SUNY Purchase.
tonight is the final evening to catch über-rock n’ roll machines The Growlers for free at the Echo. posting this occasionally NSFW video again, cause i justs lovez it soez…
The Growlers are bringing their spacey southern (cali) psychedelic twang to the Echo tonight to begin their monthlong Monday residency. methinks this might make an excellent show to get high for, especially since they’re also playing the 10th, 17th, and 31st. not like i need any more excuses to get high… anyone want to meet up beforehand?
from the Echo’s website:
The Growlers play party music that’s shot through with an undertone of melancholy. It’s as if their sepia-tinted rock songs come equipped with both the drunken cheeriness and the nauseating hangover.
They know how to rollick like champs, but they can also creep along with a vaguely Eastern European worldweariness that’s endearing. They may claim Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Lee “Scratch” Perry as influences on their MySpace page (wigga, please), but the Growlers actually sound more like Man Man if they were fixated on pre-psych rock that’s too sophisticated to be considered “garage.” This nebulous quality makes the Growlers one of the most interesting bands working in the region.
The Growlers sent us a CD called The Greatest Hits, but at 25 tracks and 78 minutes, it sounds more like an archival clearinghouse of ideas. Most of these songs exude a casual, understated cool, marked by winding, mesmerizing, spangly guitars and Brooks Nielsen’s riveting, woebegone vocals. Even 38-second scraps such as “My Forehead’s Dripping Ocean” bear close listening.
They’re not very blues-rooted, but they do project an un-hokey sadness that consoles rather than brings you down (could be the band’s recessive folk genes). As I wrote in my live review on our Heard Mentality blog, “Their music possesses an insidious infectiousness that sneaks up on you like inebriation after a few sweet libations” (see “The Wildbirds and the Growlers, Detroit Bar,” Aug. 7, 2007). I bet you become besotted, too – OC Weekly
Casiotone For The Painfully Alone – Casiotone For The Painfully Alone Is A Yellow T-shirt
this song makes me cry every time i listen to it and if it doesn’t touch you then you have no soul. (yes, world, jesus satan can cry. granted, it’s usually when i stub my toe or hurt my penis or something like that, but it still counts.) anywho, über-emo Casiotone For The Painfully Alone i.e. Owen Ashworth and his schtick of cheesy minimal electronic keyboard beats and forlorned whispering that somehow manages to rip your heart asunder with its deploringly honest lyricism while all you can do is scream out because for the first time you know what it is to really feel is playing the Echo tonight and you can be fucking sure i’ll be there. especially because tickets are all Fugazi style at only $8.
there just is no other band in the world that sounds even remotely like this project, and since 2006 Ashworth has moved beyond old rundown keyboards that he finds at thrift stores to incorporate a litany of other instruments and conspirators. on this tour he’s even sporting a full blown backing band. basically, he’s a little happier this days, which is nice, because a mother worries.
this is by far a three thumbs up show from jesus satan, so hopefully i’ll see you there and we can cry together. it’ll be cathartic, and then the healing can finally begin. (go check out his albums here at Tomlab, too.) Concern, Former Ghosts, and Second to Second open.

Remember the Air Guitar championships a few weeks ago? Well then, “Air Sex” should be pretty self-explanatory. If you have nothing to do later and want to compete, just go ahead and lube up your… imagination… and get out there.
From the source:
“To find a new champion for this year, we are taking the Air Sex crew on the road across North America for three weeks, bringing along emcees, judges, and performers that wowed the crowds in Austin last year. In each city, they’ll be inviting local Air Sexers up to the stage at rock club venues, and the winner of each round will be flown to the Air Sex World Championship Finals later this summer. – Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Blog
i’ve never really heard of any of these guys but Scion is behind it and the flier is rad, plus it’s free, so they get a shout. tonight the Scion A/V -Trouble & Bass CD release tour hits The Echo with Drop The Lime, AC Slater, Star Eyes, DJ Skeet Skeet and The Captain. it might be too late, but hopefully you already RSVP’d here to get in like i told you to way back when.
you gotta hand it to these Chairlift kids. they’ve got plenty of energy (must be on uppers.) tonight they’re headlining a show at the Echo with Luke Top and The Frequency, followed by a Chairlift DJ set at Dance Right for the official afterparty with Mike Simonetti, IAMSOUND(SYSTEM), and DJ Pubes (grossest DJ name in America) on the wreck the tape decks at La Cita.
this Saturday they play a FREE show with Dublab DJs Frosty and Ale at the Getty for the more or less monthly Saturdays Off the 405 series (parking is free now, too!). and just in case you happened to miss all that (put down the bongs you lazy bastards), on Sunday they make a stop for another show at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. i hate overachievers.
