when Dinosaur Jr. roamed the earth… (this Tuesday, actually, they’re roaming the earth this Tuesday at the Troubadour, and they’re doing it for free!!!)

February 22nd, 2010

feel like standing around for hours on end and waiting for a bunch of old dudes to make you deaf? of course you do! Dinosaur Jr. is playing a free surprise (yeah right… there’s this thing called the internet, folks) show at the hella intimate Troubadour this coming Tuesday night. the doors open at 8pm, and it’s first come, first serve. good luck y’all. if people (morbidly OBESE people at that) are willing to spend their unemployed days in line just to get a free Moons Over My Hammy, then the wait for this one will probably go down the block. good thing Dinosaur is so loud, you’ll probably be able to hear them anyway. (Troub’s email says to send an email to dinojr@mog.com to get your name on the list, though it doesn’t guarantee entry. also it’s eighteen and over.)

oh you indie kids and your stop motion fetish… new video for Submarine Symphonika from the Submarines

December 2nd, 2009

The-Submarines-live-at-the-troubadour-los-angeles
The Submarines‘ new video for Submarine Symphonika is so cute it makes me want to do something truly horrific just to even out the tao a little. director Josh Forbes also made the awesome video for Peace and Hate, and he has a ton more music videos available for your perusal at his Winch&Pulley site, including videos for Sea Wolf, Cold War Kids, Ariel Pink, Alkaline Trio, and a ton more. (this one for Trouble is a Friend from hipster cutie Lenka is pretty slick, although you might want to turn down the volume and just watch the illustrations. oooh, burn!)

TONIGHT: Dinosaur Jr. left some eardrums unshattered so they’re returning for another sonic assault at the House of Blues Sunset Strip

November 5th, 2009

Dinosaur Jr. – Seemed Like The Thing To Do

not too surprisingly, indie rock’s elder statesmen Dinosaur Jr. are returning tonight to Los Angeles after two sold out shows at the Troubadour in June. they’re playing the House of Blues Sunset Strip, and the place will be lucky to still be standing after J., Lou and Murph finish plugging in those purple amps. i’ve said it before, and i’ll say it again. loudest fucking band in America. (My Bloody Valentine doesn’t count, they’re from the Old Country.)
i imagine at this point that the inside of J. Mascis’ ears sounds like the scene in Fight Club when Ed Norton gets done shooting a bullet through his mouth and there’s nothing but ringing while people mouth things to him and look worried…

TONIGHT: HEALTH is LOUD at the Troubadour

September 9th, 2009

HEALTH with Pictureplane, Mi Ami and Dam Funk at the Troubadour in Los Angeles

sharing a pen-shant for all-capital-letter names but eschewing the pretentiousness that is YACHT, Los Angeles promised-peoples HEALTH are playing the Troubadour (9081 Santa Monica, 90069) tonight on their headlining lonesome as a quick addendum for their opening slots on the last two Nine Inch Nails’ performances ever this week.
surprisingly, the show still has tickets available, so get ‘em here, and be sure to get there early to catch Pictureplane, Mi Ami and Dam-funk so that you can tell me what they sound like because i’ve never heard of any of them. here’s a new video from HEALTH for the single Die Slow. they even directed it themselves, those hipster swine show-offs…

TONIGHT, TOMORROW and WED/THURS (with Nine Inch Nails) Mew are spending some quality time with Los Angeles via a plethora of shows…

August 31st, 2009

Mewseum-Mew-plays-Los-Angeles-at-Zune-L.A.

Mew is playing a grip of shows around town the next few days, but good luck seeing them. tonight they’ll be debuting a couple new music videos and doing a special live performance (i.e. a few songs) for a Microsoft-sponsored event called “Mewseum” at Zune L.A. (8275 Beverly Blvd). tomorrow night they’re headlining a sold-out show at the Troubadour (jesus satan will be at this one), and then Wednesday night and Thursday night they open up for two of Nine Inch Nails’ four last shows ever; Wed at the Palladium (jesus satan will be at this one, too) with Qween Kwong, and Thurs at the Henry Fonda. of course, both of these shows are TOTALLY sold out (obviously), so your best bet is probably the Zune thing tonight from 7pm-10, which at the very least is free to not get into. email mewseum@sonymusic.com to try to get on the list.

Dinosaur Jr. – Seemed Like The Thing To Do

not too surprisingly, indie rock’s elder statesmen Dinosaur Jr. are returning to Los Angeles after two sold out shows at the Troubadour last month. they’re playing November 5th at the House of Blues Sunset Strip, and the place will be lucky to still be standing after J., Lou and Murph finish plugging in those purple amps. said it before, and i’ll say it again… loudest fucking band in America. TONIGHT: Tortoise comes out of their shells with a free show at Amoeba Hollywood. good thing, too, cause Saturday at the Troubadour is allllll sold out…

July 9th, 2009

Tortoise – Adverse Camber (Autechre Remix)

tonight Tortoise is playing a free show at Amoeba Records in Hollywood at 6pm for those poor bastards (i.e. YOU) that didn’t get tickets for the sold out show this Saturday night with Earthless at the Troubadour. there’s likely to be a line tonight, so if you’re STILL a poor bastard because you can’t get in to Amoeba either, then you’re only KIND OF a poor bastard because Amoeba is going to stream the show for you live here. that way everyone gets to share. isn’t that nice of them? don’t forget to send them a thank you letter, or next time they might not get you anything at all.

Tortoise One Man Marching Band cgan946lTortoise – July 11th at the Troubadour
A historic band for indie rock, this Chicago band is credited with “revolutionizing” American indie rock in the mid-’90s by emphasizing the incorporation of a variety of left-field music genres from the past 20 years, like Krautrock, dub, avant-garde jazz, classical minimalism, ambient and space music, film music, and British electronica instead of the punk and rock & roll influences–which had dominated indie rock for years before. While hard to categorize this mostly instrumental band, it seems the overall consensus of the genre has been dubbed ‘post-rock’. They have a new album out next month Beacons of Ancestorship–long awaited since their last release in ‘06. They will bring you all the live music you can handle! Another not-to-miss.

TONIGHT: Mika Miko likes alliteration at the Smell

July 8th, 2009

Mika Miko – I Got A Lot (New New New)

sorry children of the world, Dirty Projectors at the Troubadour is all sold out. so go see Mika Miko at The Smell with Ty Segall, Shark Toys and Charlie & the Moonhearts. especially since they are an “underground youth punk/noise band” according to Wikipedia. you wouldn’t want to miss being underground, would you? (just in case you feel like being underground, but just not tonight, then you can catch them again at the Smell on Friday, July 17th.)

TONIGHT: Amanda Palmer, will you marry me? at the Troubadour

June 25th, 2009

The Dresden Dolls – Slide

fresh off an amazing performance at Coachella, as well as a ton of other projects, Amanda Palmer (one half of über-amazing Dresden Dolls) is returning to L.A.with a sold out show tonight at the Troubadour. Palmer, accompanied by performance art troupe The Danger Ensemble, gave one of my favorite performances last year at the Henry Fonda, when in the space of two hours or so she pretended to sexually assault Katy Perry with Margaret Cho, resurrected herself from the dead, and welcomed my favorite author of all time, Neil Gaiman, to the stage to read a recital that he had written specifically for her. not a bad night. she’s poetically histrionic, but never slips into tediousness, always clever and amusing, and you should all be jealous because  she stood right next to me during Leonard Cohen’s captivating performance at Coachella.

TONIGHT: it’s a love triangle when Brodi Dalle leaves The Distillers to move in with Spinnerette at the Troubadour

June 24th, 2009

Spinnerette – Ghetto Love from toni eklund on Vimeo.

punk rawk goddess Brodi Dalle and her new band Spinnerette are showing quite a bit of a Queens of the Stone Age influence, possibly thanks to member and original QOTSA guitarist Alain Johannes, or possibly thanks to a marriage with QOTSA singer Josh Homme (lucky bastard…). in my opinion, it’s definitely a good thing… i never got into the Distillers that much. there was a lot better punk rock out there, and Dalle’s voice was a little too forced whiny punk princess for me, but i have to admit, i really, REALLY like the stuff i’m hearing from Spinnerette. plus this video is amazing. see her in all her suicide girlish glory tonight at the Troubadour, unless you don’t have tickets, that is, ’cause it’s all sold out. the amazing Har Mar Superstar and Woah Hunx open.
